United Illuminating (UI) is proposing a 45 percent rate hike for residential customers in southwestern Connecticut next year. However, UI is also looking to soften the blow of the increase during the winter months.

UI officials presented their plan for a reduced rate increase during the first quarter of 2007 to the Department of Public Utility Control (DPUC). UI?s plan includes three increases in 2007, with the bulk of the hike taking effect during the summer.

Some lawmakers have called for the DPUC to defer all increases until the Legislature has a chance to address the state?s energy crisis. However, UI officials say that can?t be an option. A public hearing will be held on December 20 on potential energy legislation. Meanwhile, the DPUC is expected to decide on UI?s proposal sometime next week.
