Police have identified the woman that was killed in a car crash on Route 57 in Westport.
The accident occurred Tuesday on Route 57 a half mile north of Exit 42 off the Merritt Parkway. Police say 57-year-old Barbara Kilmetz's car was heading southbound when it somehow collided head-on with an SUV heading northbound.
Kilmetz, of Redding, was killed. Her 5-year-old grandson, who lived with the victim, was also in the car. Steven Kilmetz was rushed to Yale-New Haven Hospital by helicopter after the crash and is listed in fair condition.
Police say relatives who live out of state are on their way to be with the young boy. Neighbors remember the retired Weston public school teacher as a kind woman who took care of stray cats.
The three people in the other vehicle managed to escape before their SUV caught fire. They suffered moderate to serious injuries. The driver of the SUV remains hospitalized; there's no word on his condition.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
