The future of a White Plains park is now being looked into by officials after a post on social media went viral.

A local father is calling for part of Turnure Park to be turned into a splash pad.

"I think it would just be a great way for kids to cool off, especially the kids that live in this neighborhood," said White Plains resident Derrick Chaney.

Chaney is the man behind the idea. He created an online petition that got more than 400 signatures in less than 24 hours.

"I come here like twice a week and bring my kids and we hang out here at the park and one thing we've seen a lot is just the bocce courts just not be utilized," said Chaney.

Neighbors tell News 12 that groups use the courts, but not often. Parents tell News 12 they're in favor of the change.

Councilmember Jeremiah Frei-Pearson has shown support as well. In a statement to News 12, he said "I hope the city does add a splash pad and I would eagerly vote to build a splash pad if we can do so safely and in a fiscally responsible manner."

Frei-Pearson adds that the parks commissioner and mayor are looking into the cost.

"When we drive by and it's super warm, you don't see anyone at this playground because it's so hot and there's no place for kids to cool off," said Chaney. "I think it would benefit the whole community."

This is in the very early stages and does not mean a splash pad would come to the area.
