Hundreds of volunteers flocked to southwestern Connecticut beaches Saturday to pitch in and clean up litter for International Coastal Clean Up Weekend.
Adults, teens and children turned out to lend a hand picking up trash at Penfield Beach in Fairfield. Some volunteers say they don't enjoy cleaning up after other people, but they believe keeping beaches free of litter is important. One volunteer gathered more than 14 pounds of garbage.
Other volunteers tidied beaches in Bridgeport, Milford and Norwalk. Helpers are expected to tackle the beaches in Stratford and Stamford on Sunday.
