A developer's plan to construct a new hotel and an apartment building on Post Road isn't sitting well with some neighbors.
The plan calls for the Circle Hotel on Post Road to be knocked down to build both a four-story, 110-room inn and a four-story 250-unit apartment building on the property.
Some nearby residents are pushing back against the size of the proposed plan, citing potential risks to the environment, flooding concerns, increased traffic problems and more.
A
petition created by the group 'Fairfield Circle Neighbors for Responsible Development' has generated nearly 500 signatures in two weeks.
"We're all for housing, but this is extreme," Linda Batchelder says. "Because they’re coming so close to the marsh, they’re coming about 50 feet and the state recommends a 100-foot setback, we’re concerned the runoff from the roofs and all that water will disturb the health of the marsh."
The developer claims a traffic study only showed a moderate increase in traffic, and an environmental analysis proves the project will actually enhance the health of the nearby wetlands.
In a statement, The Circle Hotel says: "Our proposed Circle Hotel redevelopment will fit in perfectly with the natural beauty of the neighborhood, improve the local marsh environment, enhance pedestrian & traffic safety, and provide much needed housing and hotel rooms ... all while contributing ~$1.5MM of taxes to the town."
Since the plan would increase the number of units on the property from the current 80 to a whopping 360, organizers say they're aiming for a compromise.
"We just feel like it’s overwhelming," Batchelder says. "We’re looking for a middle, but they’ve told us they can’t make money if it’s any smaller than the 360 units."
The town’s planning and zoning department says a public hearing on the matter could come as early as next month.
The plan includes 30 units of affordable housing.
