Westchester offers free minnows for residential ponds to help reduce mosquitos

Westchester County Health Department is offering free minnows for residents to put in their ponds and help prevent the spread of mosquito-borne diseases.
The department says adding minnows to ornamental ponds and water features can help stop the growth of mosquito breeding sites.
Mosquitos can carry diseases such as the Zika virus, the West Nile virus, dengue and malaria, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The minnows will be available for pick up on May 6-7 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Westchester County Airport. Residents should bring a bucket to hold the fish while they travel.
The department says residents who don't have ponds can still reduce mosquitos by clearing their properties of any standing water, like puddles.
