A trio of siblings from Weston collected 500 toy donations for the Toy Closet at Yale New Haven Hospital in just three months.
Owen, 10, Emmy, 8, and 4-year-old Evan began their collection by asking family and friends for donations instead of birthday gifts back in May.
At such young ages, the Bernheim siblings have already made such a huge impact on their community.
With help from their parents on social media, the cause gained lots of recognition. One donation came from as far as Qatar.
The family tells News 12 Connecticut that the inspiration for collecting donations came from Owen and his experience with receiving toy gifts after a life-saving brain surgery at just 8 months old and 12 MRIs since then.
"It was obviously very nerve wrecking, and when Owen had to go for the MRIs, he had to get sedated all the time so he'd come out of the sedation and be not feeling that great,” said Owen’s father, Eric. “So when we were walking out of the hospital and he got a toy, it always put a smile on his face."
The toys are set to go out for delivery on Sept. 10, and he family is accepting donations until then.
