Westport is looking at banning recreational marijuana sales even before it’s legalized in the state.
Some town leaders say it's inevitable that Connecticut will legalize recreational marijuana, so they want to get ahead of the situation.
Representative Town Meeting member Jimmy Izzo plans to introduce the ordinance in two weeks.
"Why not be proactive than reactive?” he asks. “A lot of times, it's like, why not put the cart ahead of the horse?"
If the state legalizes marijuana, the law would ban sales in Westport for two years so other communities could work out issues, including drugged driving.
If it passes, medical marijuana would not be affected. A dispensary is about to open on Post Road East.
Izzo acknowledged “some resistance” from his RTM collegues and members of the community. He also says that the ban could face legal challenges.
"At least I can look myself in the mirror and say, 'Jimmy, you tried to do something that you think is going to protect the health of our children,’" he told News 12.
The RTM will take the issue up on Oct. 1. It needs 75% of the vote to pass.
