People in Westport celebrated the town's commitment to keeping their community environmentally beautiful with the Tree City Flag being raised at Jessup Green.
Requirements include having a tree board or department, a community ordinance for tree care, plus an Arbor Day observance and proclamation. As part of the designation, Westport will receive grants and educational opportunities for town employees.

Last year the town was named a Tree City by the Arbor Day Foundation.
Monica Buesser, the Chair of the town's Tree Board, told News 12 it's nice to see the town's work get rewarded.
“One of the key factors is just spending $2 per resident on tree-related activities, planting, and maintenance,” she said. “And we spend over five times that much, so we definitely deserve this designation. We do take care of our trees and plant our trees and have a lot of trees.”
The flag will stay up the entire month of October.
