A Westport temple says it is taking a strong stance against gun violence.
Temple Israel on Coleytown Road has declared itself a gun-safe congregation.
Rabbi Michael Friedman says he is trying to empower the congregation to make the community safer by standing up to violation and promoting peace. He began spreading the message during the High Holy Days.
According to the rabbi, a gun-safe congregation starts with simply securing guns at home, and he says no one should feel the need to bring a gun to temple.
He also wants the 2,000-person-strong congregation to support sensible gun laws and encourage gunmakers to bring smart gun technology to the marketplace.
