This week's "What's Ailing You" looks at the common issue of dry, itchy skin.
Doctors say the bitter cold temperatures can take a toll on the condition of your skin, but they say there are ways to prevent it.
Dr. Jason McBean, of Fairfield Dermatology, says to choose a moisturizer that is thick and deeply hydrates because thinner moisturizers will evaporate within a few hours. He says ointments like petroleum jelly products will help protect your lips and skin, particularly the bottom of your nostrils where air comes in and out.
Dr. McBean also suggests dialing down the temperature during showers. Although it's tempting to go for hot water, he says you are better off with short, lukewarm showers to avoid stripping the moisture from your skin.
