This week's "What's Ailing You" focuses on what to do about consistent pain caused by sciatica.
A local woman says her "pinched nerve pain" wreaks havoc on her life. She says she experiences shooting, stinging and burning pain that often stops her in her tracks.
Dr. Peter McAllister, of the Stamford-based New England Institute for Neurology and Headache, recommends stretching for people prone to sciatica. He says stretching and other physical therapy can prevent a recurrence and ease lower back aches at the root of the problem.
Dr. McAllister also says anti-inflammatories like Advil and Aleve can bring relief.
If you are experiencing sciatica pain for the first time, doctors say it is important to get it checked out and not assume it is just a pinched nerve.
