A Winsted man accused of killing his wife appeared in court on Tuesday for the first time.

Leon Stetson appeared in Torrington Superior Court. He's charged with murder, home invasion and criminal violation of a protective order.

His charges stem from a domestic violence incident in Winchester on June 8, when police responded to a home on Oak Street around 9:40 p.m.

Officers found 54-year-old Carrie Stetson dead and 67-year-old Leon Stetson seriously injured. Leon was taken to Hartford Hospital.

Stetson was arrested later that week at Hartford Hospital. Carrie's manner of death was ruled a homicide.

Carrie was a beloved cafe owner in Winsted, where the community continues to mourn the loss of her.

During his brief court appearance on Tuesday, Stetson's defense attorney said they've had discussions with the State Attorney's office and requested more time before a probable cause hearing.

Stetson's next court date is set for Aug. 11.
