A serious crash involving a moped scooter at a busy Yonkers intersection is renewing concerns among residents who say the area has long posed safety challenges for pedestrians and drivers alike.

According to Yonkers police, officers responded to the intersection of Bronx River Road and Midland Avenue around 7:48 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 27, for a motor vehicle crash involving a car and a motorized scooter.

Police said the scooter operator suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital in critical but stable condition. Authorities said he is expected to survive.

"There appears to be no criminality involved, and the incident is being investigated as a traffic accident at this time," police said in a statement.

Video obtained by News 12 shows the scooter traveling on Midland Avenue toward Fleetwood when it is struck by a vehicle turning left onto Bronx River Road.

The incident has prompted renewed discussion about safety at the intersection, where residents say speeding vehicles, malfunctioning pedestrian signals and light pole issues have been ongoing concerns.

News 12 observed multiple light poles and pedestrian crossing signals that were not functioning at the intersection Thursday morning.

"People are paying taxes here. Just fix the light...the safety has to come first," said Yonkers resident Robert Capobianco.

Mount Vernon resident and Yonkers native Kish Ferguson said he avoids crossing there at night.

"I'm probably going to worry about getting hit by a car," he said.

The crash comes about a year after a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle while crossing at the same intersection.

In response to questions from News 12, the City of Yonkers said two pedestrian signals at the intersection were replaced Thursday afternoon by the Department of Public Works Street Lighting.

City officials added that the intersection is equipped with an exclusive pedestrian crossing phase, which they describe as the safest signal operation for pedestrians. They also noted that a red-light camera is installed at the location.

The city said its Traffic Engineering Department has received no complaints regarding the intersection.

Still, some residents believe additional measures are needed.

"People do speed. There's a speed sign over there where you can see people are speeding right through. There needs to be more observation on what's going on here," said Yonkers resident Ivy Wilensky.

As the investigation into Tuesday's crash continues, residents say they hope attention to the intersection will lead to improvements that make the area safer for everyone who uses it.

Yonkers police added that the number of accidents in 2025 versus 2026 year-to-date at the intersection shows the city is down one incident.

There have been 15 accidents as of now in 2026, and 16 in 2025.
