News that the 2026 World Cup is coming to the United States has soccer fans buzzing across Connecticut.
Experts say the event is a huge financial win for North America and it could bring in as much as $14 billion.
Gary Golden at the Soccer Post shop in Fairfield says he expects jersey sales to soar.
"This is very big Portuguese community in Bridgeport, that's why you can see we have Portugal, Brazil and Mexico," he says. "Plus America, I think we'll be fine."
The United States, Canada and Mexico won their joint bid to host the tournament. Sixty of the 80 matches will take place on American soil. Our neighbors to the north and south will host 10 games apiece.
The final game is expected to take place at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, where the New York Jets and Giants play their home games.
The 2026 World Cup will be the first in the United States since 1994.
This year's World Cup starts Thursday in Russia. Team USA failed to qualify.
