Sept. 19 marked International Talk Like a Pirate Day – an international “holiday” where everyone gets to talk, well, like a pirate.
There is no better place to celebrate the holiday than on the campus of Seton Hall University – home to the Seton Hall Pirates.
The day is a chance for the Seton Hall Alumni Association to get out and celebrate the bandits of the seven seas. They were giving out pirate names and having peg-leg races – all in an effort to boost school spirit.
There was also a charity aspect to the day, with a fundraiser for the Bahamas hurricane relief and the Newark water crisis.
Overall it was a day where everyone can act silly in a world that has becoming increasingly more serious.
According to the official website, International Talk Like a Pirate Day was first thought up by a group of friends who were playing racquetball one day in 1995 and began to inexplicably cheer each other on using pirate slang.
The tradition remained amongst the group until syndicated humor columnist Dave Barry caught wind of it and the rest is history.
Sept. 19 was chosen because it was the date of one of the friend’s ex-wife’s birthday, and they thought it would be easy to remember.
