Parts of Mercer County were under a flood warning Monday due to high levels from the Delaware River caused by heavy rains and chunks of ice.
The waters reached minor flood stage - just under 20 feet at the river gauge in Trenton, which was enough to cause flooding along Route 29 southbound near Calhoun Street. The highway was partially shut down due to the water and ice.
Several New Jersey residents came out to the river to view the sight of the large chunks of ice. Kathleen Weitzel took her niece and nephew to the shores to get a closer look at what some are calling a rare event.
"I'm amazed at what Mother Nature can do; how it can stop everything in an instant,” she says. “It's beautiful. It’s nature. It’s natural."
The National Weather Service says the river is expected to fluctuate near flood stage into Tuesday.
