A Darien staple is closing its doors after 30 years in business.
Darien Doughnut will officially close on Aug. 25.
Customers say the employees know many of their names and orders.
William Tamme has owned the shop with his wife for the last 13 years. He says the relationship he has made with his customers and employees has been incredibly rewarding. Tamme says a landlord has decided he wants to redevelop the shopping center.
He left the corporate world to pursue something different, and he says the doughnut shop took on a greater meaning than he ever imagined.
"Turned out to be a much more rewarding experience than I expected it to be," Tamme said. "You know, you think doughnut store, but in fact the relationship you build with your customers, the relationship you build with your employees, they all turn out to be surprisingly meaningful."
For the last three years, Sophia Talwalker has come to the shop every day before school for her iced coffee with cream and sugar. She says the people are always looking out for her and that she was devastated when she heard it was closing.
"It must be so sad, this is a place for the community," said Talwalker.
