The family of a New Jersey girl killed in an amusement ride accident in southern New Jersey is looking for anyone who witnesses the incident.
Hailey McMullen, 10, was killed when she was thrown from a spinning ride called “Xtreme” while attending The Deerfield Township Harvest Festival. The ride was operated by Skelly’s Amusements. The company says that the rides were recently inspected.
New Jersey State Police and the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs are investigating the incident. They have shut down all other similar rides in the state until they can determine why McMullen was ejected from the ride.
McMullen was a fifth-grader at Deerfield Township Elementary School. Grief counselors were at the school this week to offer support to students and teachers in the aftermath of her death.
The McMullen family attorney released a statement that says, "The parents of Hailey McMullen would like to thank you for the love, support and prayers given to them during this difficult time in their lives."
The statement continued, "Although the family greatly appreciates these thoughts and prayers, they ask that you honor their wishes for privacy during their grieving process."
Makeshift memorials honoring McMullen have been placed around Deerfield Township while the community mourns. The girl’s viewing has been set for Friday from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. at Maranatha Baptist Church in Millville. It is open to the public. Her funeral will be a private ceremony on Saturday.
The victim’s father, Chris McMullen is a Salem City police sergeant. The Salem Police Officer’s Association is collecting donations to help the family pay for funeral expenses.
Checks or donations may be sent to: Salem Police Officer Association (SPOA), C/O Hailey PO Box. 62 Salem, NJ 08079-0062. All of the donations will go to the McMullen Family.
The family would also ask that anyone who witnessed or has any information about the incident to provide that information to Detective Richard Hershey of the New Jersey State Police in Bridgeton at 856-451-0101 as well as their attorney Milton W. Brown, Esq at 856-845-7898 or email mbrown@sjinjurylaw.com.
