Rockland County first responders ran through practice drills Wednesday to make sure they're prepared to work together when duty calls.
Local police officers, firefighters, EMS personnel and other crews completed drills at the Rockland County Fire Training Center.
Several departments and county entities worked together to run through a number of scenarios.
"Which people might need to be medevacked, there'll be issues pertaining to traffic control and management, fire suppression, managing a hazardous material incident,” says Christopher Jensen, the program coordinator at the Office of Fire and Emergency Services.
Rockland County Deputy Fire Coordinator John Kryger says training like this is crucial.
"It's inter-agency cooperation that we don't normally get on a small fire,” he says. “We're bringing in the police, we're bringing in EMS, we're bringing in utilities— it gives the command staff a chance to interact. We need a unified command, and that's what it's all about."
Lt. Jose Martinez, of the Suffern Police Department, says the training keeps the first responders safe.
"Like anything else, practice helps you develop skills that may come into play for a critical incident. So, it's very important,” he says.
The first responders partake in the cross-department drills every quarter.
