A new senior housing complex specifically catered to LGBT seniors is coming to Suffolk County – specifically Bay Shore – in 2021.

A new affordable LGBT housing complex will be built on the former site of an LGBT community center. It will be the first time in Suffolk County that LGBT-specific housing will be available for seniors.

Construction is beginning on Park Avenue for 75 units, both one-bedrooms and two-bedrooms for LGBT and LGBT-friendly communities. 

David Kilmnick, CEO of the LGBT Network, says this is a project they’ve been expecting and hoping for for a long time.

“No one should have to feel that they can’t love and be loved for who they are,” Kilmnick said. “And this housing is going to change that for our LGBT seniors.”

The community is going to be for people 50 and older. The LGBT Network says rent will range from $1,100 for a one-bedroom and $1,600 for a two-bedroom.

The total cost of the project is going to be $30 million. Some of the money is coming from a federal budget, some will come from the state and about $1.5 million will come from Suffolk County.

Kilmnick says that they expect people to be moving people in for 2021, and that it will be done through a lottery system.
