Local leaders and street safety advocates are demanding that the state take action in protecting children.

Community members are calling on the state Senate to go back into session to pass the school speed cameras bill. The bill has already been approved by the state Assembly.

The current school camera program limits where and when the cameras can be used and is set to expire on July 25.

Street safety advocates say the speed cameras in school zones hold drivers accountable and ensure that children can safely get to and from school. Parents of children who were killed by speeding drivers say too many young lives are being lost.

"That would help us save lives when people are aware that there are speed cameras on the streets they slow down," says Lizi Rahman, whose son was killed in a truck crash. "It is very obvious if they know there are no speed cameras they don't care."

Advocates say they plan to rally in Albany Thursday to continue their fight.
