Animal authorities have rescued more than 30 dogs and a number of other pets from a Union City apartment unit.
The animals were taken out of a building on 48th Street Thursday. Neighbors tell News 12 New Jersey that dogs are not allowed in the building. The women who lived in the apartment reportedly had 32 dogs inside.
Officials were called to the building after the woman reportedly left a faucet running inside her unit, flooding the building.
The dogs were mostly Shi-Tzus, Pomeranians and Malteses.
Animal Control officer Michael Santini tells News 12 that the conditions inside were horrific.
“Dogs were all over the place. Clothes all over. There was feces of mice. There were cockroaches.  There was a disgusting smell. I’ve never smelled that before,” he says.
Apartment resident Ana Arroyo says that she would occasionally question the woman living in the apartment about the dogs.
“On many occasions I would ask her, ‘How many dogs you have,’ and she told me five. One time she told me 10,” Arroyo says.
Firefighters had to break into the apartment to get access to the animals. In addition to the 32 dogs, they also found three cats and 15 birds.
The animals were taken in by the Humane Society and they will eventually be put up for adoption.
Law enforcement officials say that they are not sure if charges will be filed. They are waiting to see if the owner is mentally fit.
