Police say two juveniles from Bridgeport are in custody Tuesday morning following a chase that involved a stolen car out of Fairfield.
They say the chase happened around 3 a.m. when they were called to Dudley Drive on a report of suspicious people breaking into cars.
According to police, the 17-year-old suspects were backing out of a driveway in a stolen SUV when they arrived on the scene. They say they tried to pull the driver over, but the he took off and the chase ensued.
Officials say the chase ended in a crash at the intersection of Kings Highway and North Avenue. The driver was traveling down Tunxis Hill Road near the Bridgeport line when he lost control of the car due to deployed spike strips by police.
"They successfully deployed the spike strips in the area of Tunxis Hill Rd and Black Rock Turnpike, where it let the air out of two of the four tires," says Fairfield Police Lt. Robert Kalamaras. "Officers let the vehicle get ahead of them a little bit and that’s where the operator could not negotiate the curve at the intersection of Tunxis Hill Road and Kings Highway."
Police say the driver bailed, but officers quickly took him into custody in a nearby parking lot. They say the passenger needed to be extricated from the vehicle.
The driver and passenger were taken to the hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening.
Officials say the driver has a suspended license.
They say the two juveniles are facing burglary and larceny charges among others, and will appear in juvenile court later this month.
