Police say they have charged a man with murder in the disappearance of his aunt after he allegedly told his brother that he had "done something bad."
Andros Topping, 42, was arrested Friday and charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter in connection with the disappearance of his aunt, 69-year-old Patricia Myers.
He is expected to be arraigned Saturday in Bronx Criminal Court.
Police interviewed Topping at the 44th Precinct Friday after questioning him on Thursday. Topping had been staying with Myers at her apartment at 1295 Grand Concourse.
Police say he was paroled about two weeks ago after serving 13 years in prison for an attempted burglary in Manhattan and a felony assault.
Myers, a former nurse, was reported missing from her home on April 27. Police say they discovered blood inside her second-floor apartment, along with her oxygen tank and walker, on which neighbors say the retired nurse depended in order to get around.
Neighbors say the day Myers went missing, Topping had been knocking at her door for 20 to 30 minutes until she finally came out and asked where his mother was. They say he told her he had come alone.
They say the next time they saw Topping was a few days ago when police began their investigation. They say he was calm and asked police why they were there.
"He showed up exactly at the time the police was here already doing their investigation," says Edgar Wilson, Myers' neighbor.
Police say Topping told his brother he had done something bad and asked him not to turn him into the authorities.
Officials say they have not yet recovered a body in the case.
