A community center in Stamford is once again in danger of closing.
The Yerwood Center has been a community staple for several decades. Financial issues and allegations of mismanagement temporarily shut down the center last year.
Yerwood lost its state license due to building code violations, resulting in the halt of all after-school programs. Necessary upgrades have been stalled due to the turnover of the center's board and executive director, fueling rumors that the center might close for good.
Stamford NAACP President Jack Bryant says that if the center remains closed to programming, it will have a ripple effect throughout the city. "There were mentoring programs here, there was job training here -- it was a great institution," he says.
According to Bryant, there are groups willing to step up and fund the programs, but only once the center's board is fully functional.
Michael Pollard, with the City of Stamford, says that although Yerwood is not part of a city agency, the mayor is committed to re-establishing services.
Pollard met with the newly established board on Friday. He says they are still assessing the situation, and that there is much work to do.
