The bittersweet sounds of honor and sacrifice filled the Tilles Center concert hall in Greenvale Wednesday in memory of fallen NYPD Sgt. Paul Tuozzolo.
The musical tribute was performed by 330 students from 16 Long Island school districts and musicians from the NYPD. They lifted the spirits of hundreds of people in the audience, especially Tuozzolo's widow, Lisa. She said she was thrilled to see students honoring her husband.
Tuozzolo was killed during a Bronx shootout on Nov. 4, 2016. His last words and actions saved the life of his partner. Tuozzolo was remembered as a hero by many, including his cousin-in-law Brian Balmages.
Balmages, a composer, wrote a piece called "Miles of Blue" as a tribute to Tuozzolo. The inspiration came from the sea of blue -- 20,000 police officers strong -- that showed up from around the country and Canada to pay their respects at Tuozzolo's funeral.
The concert raised money for the Silver Shield Foundation, which helps children of fallen police officers and firefighters with the cost of their education. Tuozzolo's two young sons will one day benefit from it. But for now, Lisa says her family is already enriched by the support of so many.
