A 19-year-old dog is home safe with its family after being rescued from a frozen pond in Fairfield on Monday.
The rescue happened Monday morning by Robert Lane. Firefighters say the Shepherd mix, named Delilah, went onto the ice and couldn't get back to shore.
They say firefighter Rob Petrie had to wear a special wetsuit to rescue Delilah, who was cold and wet, but not hurt.
Petrie says that as soon as he stepped on the ice, it broke, but his suit helped him to float and he was able use a pole provided by animal control workers to grab hold of the dog.
Firefighters say the dog's owner did the right thing by calling emergency crews instead of attempting to go out on the ice to try a rescue alone.
Firefighters want to remind residents to stay off any frozen bodies of water. They say the ice is still thin and unsafe.
