A house fire in Wading River left two firefighters injured Wednesday after the second floor of the home partially collapsed while they were inside.
The fire broke out around 11:30 a.m. on 19th Street, quickly engulfing the two-story structure before fire crews could bring it under control.
Heavy smoke and flames were visible as firefighters battled the blaze. According to Wading River Assistant Fire Chief Denise Gluck, the second floor partially collapsed, causing injuries to two members of the department.
“On my arrival, I saw a two-story structure with heavy fire in the front and the side, with minor extension to the adjoining house next door,” Gluck said. “During the event, there was a partial collapse of the second floor, resulting in members of our department being injured.”
The injured firefighters were transported to a hospital. Their conditions have not yet been released.
The homeowners made it out of the house safely and unharmed by the time emergency responders arrived, but the fire left their home destroyed.
“I really don’t have words for the people inside the house,” said neighbor Jay Castro. “I’m just so sorry for them.”
