A five-car pileup near Route 25 in Trumbull killed two people Saturday and sent another four to the hospital.
Trumbull resident Donna Festa and Monroe resident Peter Chila were killed in the multi-car crash. Festa?s husband and daughter were among four people injured in the crash and are listed in critical condition at Bridgeport hospitals.
Authorities say the chain reaction of crashes started when a black pickup couldn?t brake in time for stopped traffic. An investigation is pending, but it is believed speed played a role in the accident, according to authorities.
Main Street was closed for most of the day, and the smashed vehicles were not moved as police tried to determine what led to the accident. Police say the crashes are rare in the area and occur more frequently on highways.
?It's usually not a high accident location,? says Trumbull Police Deputy Chief Michael Harry.
