In an effort to make the city safer, Bridgeport police are trying to get guns off the streets with a buyback event coming up this weekend.

The event is set to take place at the Bridgeport Police Community Services building at 1395 Sylvan Ave., where guns can be turned in, no questions asked. It’ll be going on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The “stop the violence” buyback is led by Bridgeport police alongside the city’s Council of Churches.

Organizers say there will be gift cards given for each gun turned in. Guns must be fully operational and be emptied out before being given.

This is something Bridgeport police have been doing each year the past several years. At Bridgeport's event last year, around 20 guns, including an AR-15-style rifle, were turned in. Gift cards of up to $250 were given out.
