Four people were hospitalized following a wrong-way crash on Route 8 in Bridgeport Sunday.

State police say after 6 p.m. Sunday, a 38-year-old Bridgeport woman was driving a Nissan Murano the wrong-way on the southbound side of Route 8 just before Exit 3, where she side-swiped a car.

"And then ultimately lost control and struck the other vehicles," said State Trooper Jannina Bonilla.

After losing control, the driver side-swiped a second car, causing her car to spin out and strike two more cars. A total of five cars were involved and four people suffered minor injuries.

Sunday's crash was not the first in the area. Nearly one year ago, two people were killed by a van that was also going the wrong way on Route 8. Last year, the state allocated an additional $20 million to the Connecticut Department of Transportation to accelerate efforts to crack down on wrong-way driving.

"We're on a two-track path when it comes to wrong way flasher technology. One course is using that money from the state to purchase the equipment and install it ourselves. Another track is designing projects," said DOT spokesperson Josh Morgan. "We have areas in Norwalk, Bridgeport, Route 7, I-95, lots of different ramps that will get this technology. We're hoping that we can do about 60 before the end of the year."
