Officials have issued a warning about poison in candy. Police say parents should check candy bags and look for different or fake-looking labels or rips in packaging. They are warning of THC edibles that look like popular kids' snacks.

Bruce Ruck, the managing director of the New Jersey Poison Control Center at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, says he urges parents to read the labels of candy carefully when children bring candy home.

"Accidents happen. People can see the candy out on the counter or the edibles out on the counter and put it in with the other Halloween candy being given out - total accident - not on purpose," he said.

The Federal Trade Commission provided pictures of edibles that look like popular candy. See here.

Other Halloween safety reminders:

  • Avoid homemade treats when trick-or-treating.

  • Use non-toxic makeup for face paint.

  • Avoid dry ice for your decorations - it can cause severe burns and frostbite.
