Police say a man fell onto the pavement from a four-story building in Bridgeport.
It happened on East Main and Arctic Street on Monday, June 3.
The family of 47-year-old Carlos Garcia says they’re heartbroken.
"I never expected to see any of my family members that way, he is on life support," said Jessica, Garcia’s niece.
The family started a GoFundMe to help with Garcia's long-term recovery.
"He has a purpose in his life, and he knows that, and we know that, and therefore, we do not believe this was an attempted suicide," Jessica said. "They're not giving up on him, and it seems like he's fighting himself, which is great."
She says her uncle is a recent UB graduate who had founded a nonprofit to help people returning home from prison.
"My uncle is literally the kindest and most genuine person that I know," she said.
Gov. Ned Lamont recognized him for his community service a short time before the incident took place.
Tony Barr, an outspoken advocate for the re-entry community, says everyone who knows Garcia is heartbroken.
"Carlos was doing a magnificent job helping people with Project Hope," Barr said. "I'm proud of him, but I want you to keep him in your prayers because he's fighting for his life."
