A 30-year-old man was rescued by Stamford first responders Thursday night after his sailboat capsized nearly a mile off Shippan Point.

Fire officials say people at the Woodway Beach Club witnessed the small boat capsize in rough waters around 8:30 p.m. and contacted police.

The man was the only person on the boat, which overturned in two foot seas with 11 to 14 mph winds. He was able to climb back into the boat, which then drifted once the sails collapsed, according to authorities.

At the time, the water temperature was 73 degrees and the air temperature was 67 and there was a considerable wind. Officials say those conditions caused the man to begin developing hypothermia.

A police boat made contact with the man and he was taken to the West Beach boat ramp. The man was treated for hypothermia by Stamford EMS and then taken to Stamford Hospital for observation.

A fire boat secured the sailboat and brought the vessel back to the boat ramp.
