‘I pray for justice. I pray for karma.’ Bridgeport homicide victim’s mom still looking for answers 5 years later

Elizabeth Delgado's pain is her constant companion since losing her son, Heriberto Marquez, five years ago.

“A song, a smell, a thought, someone that looks like him—it always hits me, always,” Delgado said crying.

But this week is especially hard leading up to Aug. 30. On that date in 2020, Marques was shot and killed on Iranistan Avenue and Hanover Street in Bridgeport. He was walking to his father's house at the time.

“At 12:19 a.m., my son was gone. And I relive it—I relive the scene, the call, my daughter telling me,” Delgado told News 12 emotionally. “She said, ‘Mami, he was murdered. He's dead. And that was the end of my world. That was the end of my world.”

Since then, Delgado has waited for an arrest. “Every single day in the morning, every single day at night, I pray for justice. I pray for karma. I pray for something,” she explained.

But the case remains unsolved. In 2021, Bridgeport police released surveillance video of a white SUV and people of interest. And last December, they featured Marquez's murder in Park City Confidential, the department’s video series on cold case homicides.

“It has consumed me so much. I'm just not me anymore,” Delgado said as she wiped tears from her face.

Delgado knows an arrest won't bring her son back, but she believes it will give her some peace.

“I want to be able to look at these individuals in their eyes and let them know exactly how I feel, let them know exactly what they took away from me,” she explained.

Delgado believes there are people out there with information, but they just haven't come forward.

“How do you sleep at night knowing you witnessed a murder? And you have a parent sitting here with no answers, and you know it all,” Delgado cried.

Despite the frustration, she is determined. Delgado told News 12 she won't stop fighting for justice even if the years continue to go by.

“I'm going to keep pushing and pushing and pushing and pushing. I owe that to my son,” she stated.

Delgado said she’s been trying to get the Connecticut Division of Criminal Justice to offer a reward in her son's cold case.

Anyone with information can report it anonymously through the Bridgeport Police Department's tips line at 203-576-TIPS.
