Baby raccoons found inside car after mother sneaks in through open window

Woodbridge Regional Animal Control is reminding residents to keep car windows rolled up and the doors to garages and sheds closed after officers responded to an unusual rescue involving a family of raccoons.
Officers were called after baby raccoons were found inside a resident’s car. A window had been left open, and a mother raccoon moved her babies into the vehicle without anyone realizing. At some point overnight, the windows were closed, leaving the mother unable to get back inside to reach her young.
During the night, the mother raccoon caused significant damage to the window, door frame, rain guard and paint while trying to reach her babies. The department thanked the resident for calling as soon as they discovered the situation.
WRAC officers safely removed the babies from the vehicle without injury and placed them in a padded box with towels to keep them warm, hoping the mother would return. When officers checked back later in the day, they witnessed the mother raccoon returning and relocating her babies one by one to a new, safe location, including the third baby from the box.
The department said the incident is a reminder of how resourceful wildlife can be—and how simple steps like closing windows can prevent situations like this.
