The Village of Croton-on-Hudson Police Department says it received reports of black bear sightings Tuesday.

"They’ve received three calls from residents and travelers on area roadways reporting black bear sightings,” says Croton-On-Hudson Village Manager Bryan Healy.

The sightings were reported along Warren and Albany Post roads, according to the village.

"It was a small bear but it's still a bear. You don’t go pet it," says Dan Calandro, who says he saw the bear.

Neighbors told News 12 they've never seen a bear in the area before Tuesday.

"I've seen deer, and rabbits and everything else but never a bear, never," said Croton-On-Hudson resident, Andrew.

Officials with the village say they get a couple of reports of sightings each year, especially around this time.

"If you see a bear, do not approach it. If possible, remain indoors, or in a safe location, until it leaves the area. If a bear is damaging property or is reluctant to leave the area, but the situation is not an emergency, call the DEC regional wildlife office during business hours at 845-256-3098. When a nuisance bear presents an immediate danger to public safety, call 911," says a Facebook post by the village.
