Legions of fans poured into Manhattan streets late Saturday night after the New York Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs in Game 5 to win the NBA championship, with celebrations quickly escalating into many chaotic scenes.

The NYPD said "unruly fans" gathered north of Madison Square Garden between Fifth and Ninth Avenues.

A total of 63 people were arrested, facing charges that include assault on a police officer, criminal possession of a weapon, criminal mischief, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and obstruction of governmental administration.

At least 10 NYPD officers were injured, including one officer who was punched in the face and another who was struck with a glass bottle.

The crowds grew into the tens of thousands as the night went on and fan behavior became increasingly destructive, police said.

One of the most serious incidents happened at 43rd Street and Broadway, where a 17‑year‑old was shot.

Police took the victim to a hospital themselves because ambulances could not reach the block due to the crowds taking over the street.

A firearm was found at the scene, and three people of interest are in custody, police say.

Police also reported four slashings and stabbings throughout the night.

In addition, five school buses being used to transport people to World Cup events at MetLife Stadium were set on fire and destroyed. Crowds were seen smashing them with bats and jumping on top of them earlier.

At least five NYPD vehicles were heavily damaged, with windows and windshields shattered. Several residential vehicles were also destroyed.

Police say people were lighting fireworks in dense crowds, climbing light poles and scaffolding, and having large fights.

Multiple streets and avenues were completely overtaken, blocking traffic for hours as crowds refused to disperse.
