The corner of East 172nd Street and Beach Avenue in Parkchester was officially renamed Detective Didarul Islam Way on Saturday to honor the life and legacy of NYPD Detective Didarul Islam, who was killed in the line of duty one year ago.

Family members, elected officials, fellow officers and community members gathered for the street renaming ceremony in the neighborhood Islam called home. His wife and three sons, including his youngest child, who was born just weeks after his death, attended the dedication.

"This tribute will help to keep his memory and legacy alive for generations to come," said Detective Kamrul Hasan, Islam's brother.

The newly renamed street sits in the neighborhood where Islam raised his family and where his children will pass on their way to school.

This month marks one year since Islam was killed in a mass shooting at a Midtown Manhattan office building that housed the NFL's headquarters. On July 28, 2025, a gunman opened fire inside the building, killing four people, including Islam.

Deputy Inspector Muhammad J. Ashraf said Islam embodied the values of the NYPD and was known for mentoring younger officers and serving the community with compassion.

"He was the police officer every command hopes for — the one who mentored the new officer, stayed late to help a neighbor and never had to be asked twice," Ashraf said. "This job was never just a job. It was a calling."

Islam, 36, was the first Bangladesh-born NYPD officer to be killed in the line of duty. He served with the department for three and a half years and was assigned to the 47th Precinct.

"No matter how hard the day, he carried himself with peace and humility," Ashraf said.

The street renaming ensures Islam's name will remain a permanent tribute to his service, sacrifice and dedication to both the NYPD and the Bronx community he called home.
