A new canine center is set to bring all the paws-itive vibes to Smithtown.

The Guide Dog Foundation and America’s VetDogs recently announced the launch of a multiyear initiative to construct a puppy development and visitor center.

The 30,000-square-foot facility is slated for construction this summer, with the building expected to open to visitors in 2027-2028.

Officials say the visitor center will serve as a place of learning, inclusion and connection for more than 300 guests. It will also host Saturday graduations and provide interactive experiences and opportunities.

The initiative will continue to raise, train and place puppies as guide and service dogs for individuals with disabilities. Officials say it will prioritize canine health and care with enhanced biosecurity, as well as a modern veterinary suite to engage and educate visitors.

The new complex will be located at the Guide Dog Foundation and America’s VetDogs current national headquarters campus in Smithtown, where it has been based for over several decades.

“We are excited to see the Guide Dog Foundation and America’s VetDogs build upon its long history in Smithtown and enhance its capacity to serve more people with disabilities, including our nation’s veterans and first responders,” Smithtown Supervisor Edward R. Wehrheim said. “In addition to supporting the organization’s growth and impact, this project will support economic development with jobs, engage the community through volunteer opportunities and become a destination for good that will change the lives of people across the country.”
