For the next five weekends, 3 train riders will see empty platforms and suspended service as crews replace aging track switches in Lower Manhattan. The MTA says the work is necessary to improve reliability and provide a smoother ride for commuters.

Some riders questioned the impact of shutting down one of the city’s busiest subway lines.

“This is one of the busiest lines in New York City. I don't understand why they would, should shut down service. They're going to have to have to run shuttle busses I guess 24 hours a day to kind of make up for it - but even that doesn't make sense to shut down the 3 train,” said Leonard, a commuter.

The service changes will include no 1 train service between 14th Street and South Ferry, along with no 3 train service between Harlem-148th Street and New Lots Avenue on weekends through August 24.

Other riders say doing the work on weekends makes the most sense to avoid larger disruptions during the workweek.

“I think it makes sense that they do the work on the weekends because it's impossible to do it during the week. Right? So do it on the weekends from Friday night to Monday morning. I think it's a great it's a great idea,” said Patricia, a commuter.

The changes are also raising concerns for some businesses along Eastern Parkway, where owners say fewer subway riders could mean fewer customers during one of the busiest times of the year.

“We've been doing this like eight years now. It will slow down my business a lot because, you know, the train and the busses -they the crowd to us,” said Amy, a local business owner.

The MTA says the 2 train will temporarily replace the 5 train between Eastchester-Dyre Avenue and 34th Street during the upgrades. Amy says while the changes may have an impact, she understands the need for the work.

“It's gonna affect us, but we have to do what we have to do,” she said.

The MTA says the service changes will continue in the coming weeks as crews work to modernize the system. Riders are encouraged to check the MTA app or sign up for text and email alerts before traveling to stay updated on any changes.
