Carmel man accused of driving while intoxicated and attempting to flee crash scene

A Carmel man is facing charges after he attempted to leave the scene of a crash, the Putnam County Sheriff's Office says.
Deputies were called to a crash on Sept. 11 at 11:30 p.m. at the intersection of Fair Street and Gleneida Avenue.
While responding, officers learned one of the drivers involved was attempting to leave.
Authorities say that officers found 19-year-old Esdras R. Cardona Ovalle behind the wheel of a 2014 Honda, which had rear-ended another vehicle, revving the engine and trying to drive away while witnesses stood by.
They say because Cardona Ovalle had the doors locked and was ignoring commands to stop, a deputy broke the driver's side window to prevent him from fleeing and endangering others.
Cardona Ovalle then allegedly climbed out through the passenger side and tried to run away.
Another off-duty deputy and an off-duty Carmel police officer, along with good Samaritans, assisted the deputy in taking Cardona Ovalle into custody. No one was seriously injured.
Cardona Ovalle's charges include aggravated driving while intoxicated, driving while intoxicated, and resisting arrest.
