Flames shoot from grate during manhole blaze in Brighton Beach

Two manholes caught fire in Brighton Beach Sunday morning, sending flames shooting from a grate in the middle of the street, according to the FDNY and Con Edison.
Emergency crews responded to the underground blaze near 2912 Brighton 7th St. at around 10:30 a.m. A Con Ed spokesperson says the incident was not weather-related.
Citizen app video captured during the chaos shows the street sectioned off with caution tape as orange flames erupt from the grate and send smoke into the surrounding area. Moments before, neighbors told News 12 they heard several explosions.
"I heard the explosion as I was lying in bed," a neighbor told News 12. "I thought it was something came from the sky."
According to the Con Ed outage map, 10 residents briefly lost power. It has since been restored.
No one was injured, according to the FDNY.
The Citizen app video also shows fire crews blasting water toward the manholes.
A neighbor's car was damaged during the incident.
"Sadly, this car right here, it took the damage," the owner who asked not to be identified said, pointing to his cracked front bumper.
Con Ed says the fire was likely related to underground equipment failure.
