A vehicle caught fire along the Metro-North Railroad tracks in Tarrytown early Friday, seriously injuring the driver and forcing trains to stop.
Tarrytown police received multiple 911 calls around 5:37 a.m. reporting a loud noise and possible fire near Paulding Avenue and the railroad tracks.
Officers found the vehicle burning along the westernmost side of the tracks and saw an individual near the vehicle. Police immediately notified Metro-North to stop trains.
The Tarrytown Fire Department responded with its Marine Unit, extinguished the fire and transported the driver to the department’s dock.
The driver was then taken by the Tarrytown Ambulance Corps to Westchester Medical Center in serious condition.
Tarrytown police are investigating with assistance from Metro-North police and Westchester County police.
Tarrytown Police Chief John Barbelet says the vehicle went airborne after leaving Paulding Avenue, which is a dead-end street, before landing on the railroad tracks.
