AAA released new details on Tuesday about the dangers of drowsy driving.
A recent study revealed drowsy driving is one of the leading causes of fatal crashes.
AAA's report stated that drivers who get less than five hours of sleep increase the risk of getting into an accident by four times, which according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is equivalent to driving under the influence.
"People should take drowsy driving seriously. Everybody knows it. But not everybody follows a correct plan of action, and we've seen that many times on our roadways. Truck drivers fall asleep, cars, drivers involved in fatalities," said AAA spokesperson Fran Mayko.
AAA suggests taking a break every two or three hours while driving or switching off with a partner at rest stops.
