Volunteers from across the nation are heading to Florida following the wake of Hurricane Idalia making landfall as a Category 3 storm.
Mudit Rungta, from Stamford, says he received a call to travel down south to serve as a disaster volunteer for the American Red Cross.
"I got a call Sunday afternoon to get ready in 24 hours to deployment, so I left Monday afternoon," said Rungta.
He is one of seven Connecticut Red Cross volunteers who are already on the ground helping. There are five more volunteers who will hit the road Thursday morning heading toward Florida.
Rungta and his crew have set up a response center in Lake City, which is between Tallahassee and Jacksonville.
This is Rungta's first deployment to a natural disaster.
"I feel really fortunate to be able to help," said Rungta.
FEMA has also deployed over 1,000 personnel to support Florida and other states in Idalia's path.
