Someone in Connecticut will ring in the New Year as a millionaire.
Tuesday’s Mega Millions Jackpot was the largest Christmas Day jackpot ever, closing at $321 million.
And while no one won it all, Avenue News in Bristol sold a winning ticket that matched all five of the winning numbers: 2, 8, 42, 43 and 50. Just the Mega Ball of 6 was off.
The ticket would have been worth $1 million, but it had the Megaplier selected, for a total of $3 million.
The winner hasn’t come forward yet, and the store owner says he doesn’t know if the person who bought the ticket is a regular customer or was just passing through. But he says he sold the ticket sometime between 6 a.m. and noon Christmas Day.
"Obviously it's pretty special, a nice little present for somebody,” says Avenue News owner Brian LaPierre. “How often can you say you gave someone $3 million for a Christmas present?"
LaPierre says he previously sold a winning ticket for $100,000 a few years ago, but never anything higher.
Avenue News will also get some money from the Connecticut Lottery.
The next Mega Millions drawing is Friday at 11 p.m.
