Bridgeport’s Beardsley Zoo is temporarily closed to the public after receiving a series of threatening calls that prompted precautionary safety measures.
Zoo officials say they activated established emergency protocols, including a temporary lock‑in and lock‑out procedure, while coordinating with the Bridgeport Police Department and local emergency management officials.
As of Tuesday, May 5, the zoo remains closed while those measures are completed. Officials say operations inside the zoo are continuing under standard safety procedures to protect staff and animals.
Authorities say recent guidance from law enforcement agencies points to an increase in hoax threats, often referred to as “swatting,” targeting public spaces such as zoos. While no credible threats have been confirmed, officials say each report requires a full public‑safety response.
“Our priority is always the safety and well‑being of our visitors, staff, and animals,” said Beardsley Zoo CEO Dr. Jim Wharton. “We are following all appropriate protocols and working in coordination with our public safety partners.”
Zoo officials say they will provide updates as more information becomes available and will reopen once it is deemed safe to do so.
