The Sycamore Drive-In, a landmark restaurant in Bethel, closed on Christmas Eve after 78 years in business, the owners said.
The establishment has been owned by the Austin family for the last 28 years. In a statement on Facebook, the family said the lease was not renewed.
"We are grateful for our loyal customers and many friends that we made along way. Your continued support, especially during Covid, is deeply appreciated. It has been a pleasure meeting so many wonderful people young and old alike," the post said in part.
The restaurant was known for its 1950s decor, its car-hop service, French-style steak burgers and homemade root beer. It also hosted summer cruise nights, which featured classic cars.
First Selectman Dan Carter said in a
Facebook post that he was grateful for "the Austins and all the employees over the years for creating such an iconic part of Bethel."
